This past weekend, The Man and I made our way to the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Fergus, Ontario. We heard it was the largest in Ontario and sounded like a great time (and good excuse to get out the kilt). We camped nearby in a Mennonite community and spent the day Saturday taking in all things Scottish.
These gals were having a great time working on a quilt to commemorate the festival.
I, however, did not have crafting on the mind. I know, I know - doesn't sound like me at all. But when I'm at a Scottish Festival, I've got Highland Games on the brain. Honestly, the Heavy Events are my favorite part of the festival. I could camp out and watch them all day, but The Man is usually only good for an hour or so.
Fergus attracts many Heavy Events participants and this year I was lucky enough to see three World Champions compete. The Man and I caught the 28 lb Weight for Distance event, which is exactly what it sounds like - competitors throw a 28 lb weight as far as they can. The winner of the competition was Harrison Bailey III (U.S.A.). This guy amazed the crowd by throwing that weight over 85 ft to win first place. Here are some pics of his winning toss.
More pics of other competitors...
Although Fergus was a great time, The Man and I decided we prefer the Kincardine (Ontario) Scottish Festival. It's smaller, usually cooler and close to the water, and on our usual camping route to the Georgian Bay area. And you can actually set-up a spot and watch the Heavy Events all day (sweet!).
And I can't leave you without a pic of The Man in his Scottish gear...
