handmade holiday 2007 v.2

I finally got the last of Liz's finished holiday gifts in the mail over a week ago. I wanted to wait until they arrived before posting photos.

The first was a wool felted messenger bag made by me. This was my first project felting wool (on purpose), and it was quite a learning experience. The bag ended up shrinking more than anticipated on the horizontal, which made it more shallow than I originally planned. The strap also felted a bit on the curly side (from the purl knit). But the colors felted beautifully together and I think it turned out great for a first attempt.

The other gift I sent to Liz was a pair of slippers made for her by my Mom. My grandma used to make a version of these for us when we were kids, complete with pom poms on the top. I was a strange child and got upset when the pom poms got dirty (it seemed to happen so quickly), so they usually got snipped off after a short period of time. But I wore those slippers until there were holes in the bottom and they were beyond repair. I'm so sentimental I wouldn't be surprised if I had a pair of worn out slippers from Grandma hidden in a box somewhere at my Mom's house.

I also made some great handmade envelopes for Liz, Morgan, Mel, and Shara this year. They're made out of magazines with nice high-quality paper and printing that Mel gets for me out of the garbage (not recycling) at her job. I have stacks and stacks of these now in my craft room just waiting for me to get to them. The pictures I took turned out unfocused and blurry, and I didn't figure this out until I put the envelopes in the mail. I'm in the process of making some more, so I'll try to take photos of the new ones for you to see.
