The Man turns 45

When I asked The Man what he wanted to do for his birthday, he said without hesitation, "Greenfield Village." So that's where I spent the day yesterday.

For those of you that are not familiar with Greenfield Village, it's a place Henry Ford designed where you can visit historical working farms, crafters, and homes of historic figures. If you went to elementary school in the Metro Detroit area, there is a very high probability that you went there on at least one field trip.

We started our visit at the working farm. We got to see horses and cows and lots of sheep (even a few rams fighting in a field!). I caught this chicken strolling out of the bushes.

I keep entertaining the idea of getting a few chickens, but for now it's just a nice thought. (I'm still working on the second dog - more about that later this week).

We then worked our way to the crafters area - my favorite part of the trip. We visited a machine shop, a ceramic studio, the printmaker, a spinner/weaver, and my two favorites - the glass and tin guys. The glass men and tin guy gave us lots of information on historical methods for these two mediums. And while The Man asked everyone questions (which he was full of), I tried to sneak and touch everything I could get my hands on behind the ropes.

Here are pictures of the tin guy working on a cookie cutter and the glass man finishing up a vase.

After all that excitement, I enjoyed some frozen custard while The Man indulged his inner child on the carousel. And of course he chatted it up with the carousel operator, a woman named Velma who is the oldest employee there at age 92. I only hope I can be half as productive as her if I'm lucky enough to live that long.

The rest of the afternoon was a blur of historic homes and people, including Thomas Edison, Noah Webster, and several Ford folks. Honestly, after the period crafters, I was just along for the ride. Before leaving, The Man decided to commemorate our trip and his big day by purchasing a vase made by the glass guys. It's the same pattern, only green.
The Man said it would be a good excuse for him to buy me more flowers. I couldn't agree more.
